Nuances in treating the Male Cosmetic Patient

February 19th, 2012

Recently I was asked by Cosmetic Surgery Times, to contribute my thoughts on treating the male cosmetic patient. The question posed; "In what ways is the male aesthetic patient differnt from his female counterpart?"
There are nuance differences between men and women. Below is an excerpt of my response from this article in a segment entitled Aesthetic Exchange.

Could your fat save your life?

November 27th, 2011

Could your fat save your life: Emphatically YES! But how?

Well, we first have to look at the cosmetic medicine field. Yes, in this case the search for beauty may lead to health and longevity!

There is a rapidly expanding field of medicine called Regenerative Medicine. I have alluded to such regenerative techniques in previous blogs about using one's own blood serum to improve skin texture and build collagen - the Selphyl platelet rich plasma or media tagged "Vampire Facelift". Facial fat grafting of which I am quite passionate; is another form of regenerative medicine. Facial fat grafting patients not only look more youthful… Read More

Health is beauty and beauty is health.

Recently a recurring theme has been evident during patient consultations at my office. Many patients believe that they are requesting a cosmetic procedure to look better, younger, more attractive, etc. From an evolutionary perspective, we are part of the animal kingdom. Yes, we have a higher level of thought and emotions. Yet, we share two survival traits of all animals on earth. We strive to feed ourselves for survival ( We work for money to buy food, versus hunting on the Serengeti, or foraging for berries in the foliage). And we want to perpertuate our DNA/genes through procreation. This later instinctual drive is the basis of "Why We're Attracted"… Read More

Liquid Lift and Fat Grafting

October 22nd, 2011
Facebook is a very good interactive format for my friends and patients. (My patients are also my friends!) The below is a question and my reply that is based on the concept of the "Liquid Lift" Friend: "Dr T have you heard of Sculptra Aesthetics?" My reply: "Hello ____, Sculptra has a product that is an absorbable component that can be injected into the face for volume. It can be useful in thin patients who do not have enough of their own fat to replace lost facial volume. I prefer fat because it is the paitent's own tissue, last longer with much less complications and when combined with their own serum (Selphyl) and activated healing factors… Read More

Have younger hands by Monday!

July 13th, 2011

We have heard it before; "She has such a youthful face, she’s in great shape but her hands give her age away.”

But you can have younger hands by Monday.

We take our health seriously.  We exercise and eat well.  We even invest in our looks with various cosmetic treatments.  Yet our hands can belie our youthful image.

Hands are a miracle of the human body.  They allow us to build and create, to communicate even if we are not Italian, and to feel our environment.  Due to constant activity our hands are exposed to the environment as much as our faces.  Chronic sun exposure leads to age spots and thinning of the… Read More

Ice Cream Truths

I am in flight from family reunions in Vermont and Michigan, heading back to my coveted home of Santa Rosa.  Feeling lighter of spirit after spending time with my family I am glad there is no additional airline fee for the extra 5 lbs. of luggage on my girth!  Zerona laser here I come…

I recently posted on Facebook a photo of my extended family smiling outside a Ben & Jerry’s ice cream parlor in Burlington, VT.  Ice cream spontaneously creates smiles and laughter.  A welcome pleasure of life!

But of course excess (as observed in any Tom family reunion) can also be detrimental.  So how do we… Read More

Breast Implants and cancer risk for a 30 year old

June 9th, 2011

Breast augmentation has now been proven to be safe for women desiring breast enhancement.  Yet because of the general public's increased breast cancer incidence, breast augmentation patients often have understandable concerns.  Below is a question I received from a 30+ year old patient of mine who had silicone implants placed 2 years ago.  She is an intelligent and strong independent woman who lives a very active and healthy lifestyle.

Her recent facebook message to me:

Hi Dr. Tom!! *HUGS* I have a question...I just found out that my mom's side of the family has also dealt with breast cancer and I know when we were… Read More

Many women complain of heaviness, back pain and a stigma from having too large a breast size.  Recently a novel approach to reduce breast volume has been introduced using liposuction.  This avoids the traditional large incision breast reduction surgery.  This was highlighted in New You Magazine: http://www.newyoumag.com/?s=breast+reduction+with+liposuction.

Below is  recent patient inquiry regarding liposuction breast reduction.

“Hi

Bikini Tuck aka Tummy Tuck under local anesthesia

Click on the above link to listen to Dr. Walter Tom on "Ask the Expert" describe the different treatments for tightening loose abdominal skin.

In our too fast paced society we want results yesterday with a no downtime but significant results.  Many of my patients desired an alternative to a traditional tummy tuck with a large incision, long recovery time and general anesthesia.  Using tumescent local anesthesia patients have been able to undergo… Read More
